Benoit Dunoyer de Segonzac, Double bass
Benoît Dunoyer de Segonzac (born in 1962 in Strasbourg) is a French double bass player, active at the crossroads of jazz, classical music and stage music.
After studying classical cello and clarinet, he discovered jazz as a teenager, took up the bass and then the double bass at the age of 20, and taught himself improvisation.
In 1997, he joined the Jacques Loussier Trio (creator of Play Bach), with whom he toured and recorded for some fifteen years, developing a crossover repertoire between Bach/Satie and jazz. In the Loussier Trio, his double bass playing was often highlighted for its melodic interplay with the piano in reinterpretations of Bach (and beyond), an approach popularised by the group's tours and recordings.
On stage and in the studio, he has collaborated with instrumentalists such as Jean-Michel Pilc, Kenny Wheeler, Vincent Courtois, Édouard Ferlet, Yvan Cassar, Steve Nieve, Bruno Fontaine and Jean-Philippe Goude; and with singers such as Ute Lemper, Bobby McFerrin, Juliette Gréco, Tom Novembre, Roberto Alagna, Natalie Dessay and Juliette.
He was also a member of the group Paris Combo alongside Belle du Berry and David Lewis.
A regular presence in the orchestra pit, he has been heard in major productions such as The Lion King, Cats, Mamma Mia! and Cabaret.
More recently, he has accompanied musical shows in Paris, notably Chance! (Théâtre La Bruyère, 2018-2019 then 2021-2022) and Virginie et Paul (Théâtre Le Ranelagh, 2024).
His discography covers a wide spectrum from classical to jazz, including chanson and ‘new’ music, and includes numerous film and theatre soundtracks. Of particular note is the album Plumes (2006) with Catherine Delaunay and Édouard Ferlet (Mélisse Music).
He also appears on recent recordings, such as Patrick Villanueva's tracks released in 2024 (Le piano penche EP), where he is credited as ‘feat.’.
In cinema/on screen, he is credited in projects such as Demandez la permission aux enfants (2007) and Denis (2013).
