Duo Gambelin: Lucile Boulanger & Christian Elin
Formed around ten years ago, the astonishing Duo Gambelin brings together two instruments – the viola da gamba and the bass clarinet – that would never have met without this desire to combine early music, jazz and contemporary creation!
The Gambelin Duo consists of two exceptional artists: Lucile Boulanger, a remarkable violist and winner of the 2025 Victoire de la Musique classique award in the instrumental soloist category, and Christian Elin, a clarinettist and composer who collaborates with the best European orchestras, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Munich and Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestras.
From works by Monteverdi and Diego Ortiz to those by Avner Dorman and Christian Elin himself, this unique duo takes us on a journey between musical worlds, where Renaissance and Baroque music meet jazz and modernity. An immersion in a sound universe that defies stylistic description, a universe that transcends boundaries.
When early music meets jazz and modernity, four centuries of music merge, carried by the sounds of two instruments that never met in the Baroque era: the bass clarinet and the viola da gamba.
Lucile Boulanger and Christian Elin do not stop at a juxtaposition of these styles. When they meet, something completely new emerges from their music: a concert like an aspiration, an immersion in a world of sound that did not yet exist. Christian Elin's compositions, written especially for this duo, create a perfect bridge by drawing on all the surprising similarities between the musical practices of Baroque music and jazz: harmonic patterns, freedom of improvisation, swing and rhythmic irregularities.
You will hear the French premieres of compositions by Guido Umberto Sacco and Avner Dorman.
